Injectables for treating dark circles are becoming an increasingly popular option for people seeking a more youthful, refreshed appearance. Dark circles under the eyes can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, thinning skin, hyperpigmentation, and even hollowing or volume loss in the tear trough area (the area between the lower eyelid and cheek).

Here are some common injectable treatments used to address dark circles:

1. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers

  • What it is: Hyaluronic acid fillers, like Restylane, Juvederm, or Belotero, are commonly used to restore volume in the under-eye area. They help to address hollowing and reduce the appearance of shadows under the eyes.

  • How it works: By filling in the tear trough (the hollow area beneath the eyes), these injectables can create a smoother transition from the lower eyelid to the cheek, which reduces the appearance of dark circles caused by shadowing.

  • Results: Immediate results that can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months. Some people may require a follow-up treatment after a few months to maintain the results.

2. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

  • What it is: PRP therapy involves injecting a patient's own blood plasma, rich in growth factors, into the under-eye area to stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture.

  • How it works: PRP can help improve the skin quality, reduce puffiness, and treat the thinning of skin that often leads to dark circles.

  • Results: Results may take several weeks to appear, and they are generally longer-lasting than hyaluronic acid fillers, though the effects may not be as dramatic in terms of volume restoration.

3. Botox (or other neuromodulators)

  • What it is: Botox or Dysport can sometimes be used to treat dark circles, especially when the dark circles are related to muscle movement and expression lines. This is typically used for people who have fine lines and wrinkles in the under-eye area that contribute to the appearance of dark circles.

  • How it works: Botox relaxes the muscles around the eyes, which can reduce the shadowing effect of creases and wrinkles. However, Botox is not a primary treatment for volume loss.

  • Results: The effects are usually seen in about 3 to 5 days and last for 3 to 4 months. Botox is often combined with other treatments like fillers for optimal results.

4. Tear Trough Filler (Specialized Fillers for Under-Eye)

  • What it is: There are also fillers specifically designed for the delicate under-eye area, such as Belotero Balance, which is a softer filler that integrates more naturally with the skin.

  • How it works: These fillers are injected into the tear trough area to add volume and reduce the shadow effect that contributes to the appearance of dark circles.

  • Results: Effects are typically immediate, and results can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months, depending on the specific filler used.

5. Mesotherapy or Microneedling with PRP

  • What it is: Mesotherapy involves injecting a cocktail of vitamins, minerals, and other rejuvenating ingredients into the skin, while microneedling creates tiny punctures in the skin to promote collagen production. When combined with PRP, these treatments can help rejuvenate the skin under the eyes and improve dark circles caused by thin skin or pigmentation.

  • How it works: These treatments aim to thicken the skin, reduce pigmentation, and improve overall skin texture.

  • Results: Results are gradual, and multiple sessions may be needed for noticeable improvement.

Considerations

  • Safety: Injectable treatments should always be performed by a trained, licensed professional to ensure safety, especially in delicate areas like the under-eye region.

  • Side Effects: Common side effects of injectables include swelling, bruising, and redness, which usually subside after a few days. Rarely, more serious complications can occur, so it’s important to choose a qualified practitioner.

  • Consultation: Before choosing an injectable treatment, it’s essential to have a consultation with a dermatologist or licensed injector to discuss the best treatment plan based on your unique needs.

Ultimately, the right injectable for dark circles depends on the underlying cause, whether it’s volume loss, hyperpigmentation, or skin thinning.

That's why a consultation is so important, to ensure you're getting the right treatment for your concerns.
